Mount
Pleasant Windmill was built in 1875 for Edric Lansdall.
In the late 1850's he became the owner of the post-mill which had
stood on North Cliff Road for centuries. Unfortunately, this earlier
post-mill
was blown down in a gale and he ordered the construction of a new
tall brick tower mill, Mount Pleasant Windmill.
The initials E. L. and the date 1875 can still be seen above the
lintel above the loading back door.
The Snell family were the next millers until they sold the mill
in 1936 to the Banks brothers. The sails were taken down at the
time of the sale as they had reached the end of their useful life.
Milling however continued, albeit for animal food, using a Crossley
stationary oil engine to power the mill.
The barn which housed the engine is now our Tea-Room and the grain
store next door was converted into a house where we now live.
In 1973, when the Banks brothers decided to retire, the property
was sold to Alan Turner who used the grounds to operate a Railway
Museum.
In 1991, the windmill was renovated by the new owners, Pat and Jane
White with the help of grants from English Heritage and Glanford
Borough Council.
Nine years later, in May 2000, we came to see the mill for the
first time and by the end of August 2000, Mount Pleasant Windmill
had once
again changed hands.
We have since continued milling and have been very busy maintaining
and repairing the mill. We now grind and sell 10 different kinds
of Pure Stoneground Organic Flours.
